What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is referred to as "The Art of the Eight Limbs" as the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this fighting art. A Muay Thai practitioner thus has the ability to execute strikes using “eight points” of contact as opposed to "two points" (fists) in Western boxing and "four points" (fists, feet) used in the primarily sport-oriented martial arts, such as Karate or Taekwondo.

In recent times, Muay Thai has received increased popularity worldwide, as it has shown to be very effective in mixed martial arts (MMA) training and competition. Many well-known MMA fighters such as Anderson Silva, Kenny Florian, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Wanderlei Silva have combined the striking elements of Muay Thai with various forms of grappling, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing into a hybrid style that has proven highly effective in their fights. The success of Muay Thai in MMA has made it, along with boxing, a de facto martial art of choice for competitive stand-up fighters. Along with the typical striking elements of punching and kicking, Muay Thai makes extensive use of the "clinch", which allows a fighter to control their opponent's movement and presents opportunities for devastating close-quarter attacks such as elbow or knees strikes.
